Ottawa, Canada
Ottawa is the capital city of Canada. Sitting on the banks of the Ottawa river in English speaking Ontario, it borders the French speaking province of Quebec. When communicating the residents of the city move effortlessly between both languages. Even though the separatist movement is not as strong as it was half a generation ago, there are distinct cultural influences fused in the city. 14% of the population of Canada have declared that they are of Irish extraction, and Irish Canadians are the fourth largest ethnic grouping in Canada. It is thought that this figure is understated and that the true figure is in the region of 20%. One of the results of this ethnic mix is an under-stated quirkiness just beneath the skin of the city. This short collection of photographs portrays this sense of fun from an otherwise serious city.
