London's cultural mix
London is one of the great world cities. It is large yet compact, and both modern and historic. Like New York, it is a city where the new seems familiar. The soulless and homogenous main streets of many other towns and cities are pale imitations: London is the real deal. But, perhaps more so than most other great cities, its inhabitants represent a total cross section of world cultures. It is an ethnic, racial, religious and linguistic melting pot – it is English and yet it is more than English: one could argue it is the true international city. This is the one feature that forcibly struck me, when, for the first time in many years, I spent some time there. This is the aspect of the city I am portraying with this work. The work was shot during the hottest July week on record in London, which helped create the lighting conditions to make these images possible. (Images taken 2015)
